440 Gallery is excited to present On Cardboard, a special summer group exhibition featuring seventeen artists working with or inspired by one of the most modest yet versatile materials in contemporary art: cardboard.
Cardboard — an everyday material found in packaging, protest signs, makeshift shelters, and studios alike — has a long and surprisingly rich history in the visual arts. From Picasso’s early cardboard constructions to Joseph Beuys’ use of it in installations, and more recently in the works of contemporary artists reclaiming discarded materials, cardboard has proven to be more than just a substrate. It is a symbol of transience, resilience, and reinvention.
On Cardboard celebrates the material’s potential to carry meaning and memory, to serve as a surface, a structure, and a statement. Whether painted, cut, assembled, or transformed, the works in the exhibition highlight the aesthetic and conceptual range that cardboard affords. Each of the participating artists — all members of 440 Gallery — brings a distinct voice to the theme, resulting in a dynamic and thoughtful conversation about materiality, sustainability, and artistic process.
