Women Painting (All over the world)

On March 8th, International Women’s Day, in solidarity with female artists around the world, the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern (MEAM), located in Barcelona, Spain, will open its doors to the exhibition Women Painting (All over the world). Contemporary realist artist (specializing in portraiture), Nanette Fluhr has been invited to return for her second year in the three-year tradition of this diverse exhibition which includes 87 paintings and drawings, by more than 78 women artists from 25 different countries and highlights the role of women in figurative art, a field historically dominated by male artists.

Fluhr’s oil painting, Manu, utilizes portraiture as a vehicle to support diversity. Her choice of subject—her friend, Sikh American artist Manu Saluja—emphasizes the mission of the exhibition in its portrayal of a female artist that has experienced not only discrimination of her sex but of her ethnicity. Fluhr uses portraiture as a pathway to empathic recognition, emphasizing the individual over any preconceived cultural biases. She captures Manu in a state of relaxed observation which contradicts her subject’s formal attire of luxuriously patterned silk—painted directly from observation.

With over two decades of professional experience, which include awards and honors—from institutions such as the Art Renewal Center, Artist’s Magazine, the Portrait Society of America and the School of Visual Arts as well as inclusion in the historic invitational presentation of North American painting, Contemporary American Realism, which toured national museums in China including the Beijing World Art Museum, Dalain Modern Museum, Tianjin Art Museum, Hubel Provincial Museum, Zhejiang Provincial Museum and the Shanghai Art Museum—Fluhr has broken down the barriers of traditional portraiture to celebrate, along with the MEAM, the indomitable spirit of female artists today.

Women Painting (All over the world) will be on view until the 2nd of May, 2021.
