Leyla Cárdenas, Permutations (Study #2)[detail view], 2014, Hand-cut glicée prints on demolition debris, Variable dimensions, Courtesy of the Artist, Photo by Arturo SanchézFor her installation, Cárdenas will incorporate materials based on momentous architecture found in the city of San Jose. Inspired by architectural surroundings, Cárdenas creates work that incorporates tangible materials from buildings that once served as distinct cultural or historical significance for the community. By using traces from old and sometimes demolished buildings, the work is a reflection on what life once was for the people who lived and worked there, and her collection of ruins serves as a recollection of the past and contemplation of the present. Cárdenas earned her MFA from UCLA and has shown her work internationally in the U.S., France, Spain, and throughout Colombia.
