As one of the featured artists in L A Noble Gallery’s Summer Salon exhibition, photographer Herb Schmitz has sparked a great deal of interest, due to his rediscovered works from the 1970’s – a particularly prolific period in a career which has spanned more than 50 years.
His early assignments took him across the world photographing celebrities, classical musicians, rock stars entertainers, artists and politicians including John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Jimi Hendrix amongst many other luminaries.
His work – exclusive to L A Noble Gallery – utilised a group of his favorite models including Barbara Trentham, Marrion Womble, Valentino and Ika. The resulting images perfectly capture the dynamic atmosphere of the fashion industry and glamorous creativity of the 1970’s. Often choosing to shoot on location in such hotspots as Julie’s Bar and Bertorelli’s, he utilised both black and white models, and played with the viewer’s ideas about gender and dress. Schmitz consistently pushed the boundaries of fashion photography to an art form. Images such as ‘Cracked Doll’ (see attached) demonstrate his characteristically inventive use of colour, which was the result of collaboration with renowned make-up artist Pierre Laroche, used by David Bowie during his iconic ‘Ziggy Stardust’ era.
