Working with a variety of styles, media and techniques, Canadian artist Guy St-Pierre presents paintings inspired by the subjects of the European masters, infused with a contemporary flourish.
Primarily self-taught, St-Pierre blends graphic aesthetics and new media practices with the traditional tenets of the Renaissance masters, conjuring works of beguiling inventiveness and novelty. Seeing the Italian Great Masters, as well as those of Northern Europe, in books and museums, St-Pierre inhaled their expert handling of light and shadow, color and form. After visiting Italy for the first time, his works took on a vigorous vivaciousness, the trip inspiring him to reinvent the paintings of old into vibrant, resonant visages. “During my artistic evolution I followed mainly the classic principles established by the Italian artists of the Renaissance until I decided to forge my own,” he explains. The artist works quickly, sketching on a tablet before putting his idea to canvas and paint, and then layering colors and light into opulent compositions.
Guy St-Pierre works as a professional illustrator, and lives and works in Canada.
