Gabe Tong’s Paintings Reinvigorate the Formal Vocabulary of Cubism

Chinese-American artist Gabe Tong has transcended traditional Abstract Expressionism to create something entirely new. In pioneering a 3D Cubist style, Tong breathes new life into the two-dimensional objects and forms prized by Cubists such as Picasso to add another dimensional plane altogether.

What results is a unique blend of geometric design and color, where thick directional lines and layers of paint combine to create sculptural vistas and a profound sense of depth. Recently, Tong has invented yet another school that reviewer Bryon Coleman has called “3D Orphism,” which he describes as an offshoot of Cubism and Synchronism. A hallmark of these paintings is their magically harmonized colors and the universal rhythm, movement and meaning they seem to capture.

Although he was born with multiple eye defects that should have prevented him from seeing, Tong has never let this challenge prevent him from creating visionary works of art that have been compared to the works of Picasso, Fernand Léger, George Condo, Peter Saul, Marcel Duchamp and Juan Gris.

About the Exhibition

The weather is heating up, and so is the atmosphere at Agora Gallery as we present art that has the ability to inspire and energize. The French Perspective: Contemporary Art from France features artworks that seem to have a life of their own, infused as they are with the passion and power of the artists who created them. Delightfully poised between the simplicity of frankness and the complexity of a conscious awareness of the world, the works speak in a language that is both compelling and persuasive. In Pathway to Abstraction, artists glory in the wonder of life and their own comprehension of it, passing on a message of optimism and understanding to us through their work. These works will capture your attention and enthrall your emotions, bringing you in to become an active interpreter of what you see. Sensorial Realms introduces us to a sense of mystery that seems to infect and enliven the banal and the everyday. The essence of creativity animates every aspect of the works, though each artist has allowed impulse and their artistic process to guide them in different ways and to produce a mood and atmosphere unique to them and their work. The exhibitions begin on June 28, 2013 and run until July 19, 2013, 2013. The opening reception takes place on the evening of Thursday, July 11, 2013. Entrance is free and art lovers looking for inspiration are warmly encouraged to attend and meet some of the artists who created these dazzling works.
