Ukrainian Artist Iryna Torskaya Explores Otherworldy Shapes

Iryna Torskaya’s otherworldly landscape portraits explore the spectacular folds of the creative psyche through the vibrant tactility of acrylic, oil and latex on paper.

A self-taught artist who in earlier years subsisted on gel pens before she could afford paint and canvas, her work is semi-autobiographical and full of positive and revelatory symbolism. A lover of white and white animals – a hue associated cross-culturally with the sacred – Torskaya’s intricate visions, which sometimes take her years to complete, are a rare blend of Surrealism, collage and Abstraction working in compact fusion. Built around the structure of her own perceptions, memories and deeply held truths, Torskaya’s images show that her true talent lies in interlacing her cognitive evaluations with the hyperreal subject matter of cultural imagination. Symbolism and myth, human figuration, animals, script and urban or natural architectonic forms all have their own coherent place in these works.

Irina Torskaya was born in Kotovsk, Odesa Oblast, Ukraine. She has exhibited professionally as an artist since 2011, and is also an accomplished composer of works for classical piano.
