Spring Workshop | Hong Kong presents Qiu Zhijie 邱志杰 The Universe of Naming on May 23–August 18, 2013.
Leading Chinese artist and teacher Qiu Zhijie takes over Spring Workshop with an expansive installation, The Universe of Naming. Through a close examination of the world’s concrete and conceptual territories, Qiu depicts a restless and insecure landscape with engraved spheres of glass, wood and steel, set against a backdrop of found, made, free and confined objects. The new inter-relationships result in an immersive and explorative experience.
The work is the next incarnation of Qiu’s Blueprints exhibition at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in the Netherlands, which in turn informed his concept as Chief Curator of the 9th Shanghai Bienniale in 2012.
Qiu’s educational philosophy values sociological inquiry, intervention and participation. Putting this into practice, Qiu will engage Hong Kong’s next generation of artists to assist in the installation via a two-day student workshop organized by Spring.
Qiu Zhijie (b. 1969, Hangzhou, China) lives and works in Beijing and Hangzhou. Known as one of China’s first video artists, his diverse practice also embraces sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography and performance.

Industrial Forest
ESKYIU
Made from hundreds of pencil-thin aluminium bamboo poles, this installation by multi-disciplinary architects ESKYIU recalls the yellow bamboo that used to populate Wong Chuk Hang. As an urban forest, the site-specific installation is configured to obscure the industrial buildings surrounding it to carefully frame the sky above. Viewing the installation from what has been described as a “Blade Runner-esque” highway overpass has a hypnotic effect, as the forest appears to simultaneously blend into and be displaced by the surrounding industrial habitat.

In addition to featuring commissioned works from Hong Kong artists such as William Lim (Tables for Friends), Douglas Young (Guns) and Kacey Wong (Spring Bird (Bill Eater)), Spring currently shows works by many other local and international artists including King of Kowloon (Tsang Tsou Choi), Luis Chan, Magdalen Wong, Wilson Shieh, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries and William Kentridge.
