Enamored of the lonely, wild vastness of the ocean, Tom Stewart uses the abstract textures and patterns created by watercolor and wax to create paintings full of a charged sense of abandon.
His work focuses on the movement of the sea, on the texture of spray, and on the interplay between the ocean and the coast. Stewart works quickly from memory, preferring to be in the moment and use his media intuitively in order to better capture the essence of his subject. “The textural aspects of my paintings are established first,” he explains, “and when all is thoroughly dry, some small representational details are often added to make the fairly abstract painting more accessible.” Stewart embraces the headstrong nature of watercolor and uses it to his advantage as he portrays the ever-changing ocean.
Tom Stewart spent many of his childhood summers on the ocean, which served to shape his lifelong passion for the sea. He currently lives on the coast of Maine, and has shown his work in several exhibitions.
