The Art Fund has helped the Hepworth Wakefield buy Wandering Palm by Eva Rothschild, the first contemporary work acquired by the gallery. Wandering Palm is one of a number of sculptures created by Rothschild for the Hepworth Wakefield’s inaugural exhibition, Hot Touch.
Wandering Palm is created from an assemblage of cast component parts of everyday objects. Its construction gives it a resonance with existing works in the Hepworth Wakefield permanent collection, particularly the hand-worked plasters by Barbara Hepworth.
The gallery’s director, Simon Wallis, said: “This is a really exciting moment for The Hepworth Wakefield. Thanks to the support of Contemporary Art Society and the Art Fund we now have this wonderful work by Eva Rothschild, one of the country’s most significant contemporary sculptors, in Wakefield’s permanent art collection.”
Eva Rothschild
Born in Dublin in 1971, Eva Rothschild is one of the most prominent contemporary sculptors working in the UK. Her work has attracted international praise for its use of a wide and varied range of materials. Her work is strongly influenced by art of the 1960s and ’70s, and while Rothschild is predominantly known as a sculptor, she has also worked in video.
Simon Wallis said: “New acquisitions by contemporary artists combined with a regularly changing and ambitious exhibition programme of historic, modern and contemporary art continue the progressive artistic legacy of the Wakefield Art Gallery founders. The collection is featured in our displays, with works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Jacob Epstein, Graham Sutherland, John Piper, and Paul Nash.”
