SHEPARD FAIREY’S DISTRIC LA BREA MURAL @ La Brea Avenue and 2nd Street, 90036
MK2 Projects and Madison Marquette will unveil an art mural completed by Shepard Fairey on November 11th, 2011.
Shepard Fairey designed and will be painting a 30ft high mural on the former Continental Graphic’s Building, newly renovated by Madison Marquette as ‘District La Brea’. The mural will stretch across the south end of the District La Brea Complex at La Brea Avenue and 2nd Street. A reception for the mural and Group Art Exhibition will take place on Friday 11/11 at MK2 Projects.
“The focus of District La Brea is to bring together unique retail, restaurants, designers, and galleries that reflect the artistic and creative landscape of the neighborhood. Our vision is to bring more attention to all the businesses in the area and to bring in new visionaries while creating a destination called ‘District La Brea.” – Brandt Leitze, General Manager, Madison Marquette.
Merry Karnowsky, who has worked with Fairy in the past, proposed Fairey for the mural project. “I’ve known Shepard for a long time and how he works. In addition to having great ideas that translate very positively and inspirationally at a scale this large, he is also someone that can execute a project of this magnitude with finesse and professionalism.” – Merry Karnowsky, MK2 Projects
In conjunction with the District La Brea Mural, there will be a 2 week group art exhibition which will open on Friday November 11th featuring original artwork by: Shepard Fairey, Deedee Cheriel, Mercedes Helnwein, Mark Whalen (Kill Pixie), Mel Kadel, Travis Millard, Matt Small, Samuel Lowder (FrePrs), Lezley Saar, Aiko Nakagawa,Todd Carpenter and Steven R.
