Art Toronto 2011. Toronto International Art Fair

This year Art Toronto will feature 109 modern and contemporary art galleries from 13 countries. In its twelfth year Art Toronto, presented by RBC Wealth Management, has become an event of national importance attracting all major stakeholders in the arts community, including the nation’s most important cultural institutions, major visual arts professionals, collectors and patrons.

2011 Flagship Project
In 2011, internationally renowned artist Kent Monkman will create a site-specific installation exploring the nuances of the relationship between the major players in today’s art market; artists, gallerists, curators and collectors. Curated by Steven Loft, the National Visiting Trudeau Fellow at Ryerson University, The Art Game will take visitors on a tour of an art market “funhouse”. With his usual wit and aesthetic precision, Monkman both celebrates and critiques this little known part of the artist’s life.

Open Space
In this newly inaugurated project, selected galleries will display large-scale sculpture and installation work on-site at the fair. Included in this year’s installation are artists Ross Bell, Marie-Claude Bouthillier, Alex Fischer, Ted Fullerton, Libby Hague, Adad Hannah, Martin C. Herbst, Micah Lexier, Derek Liddington, Markus Linnenbrink, Amanda McCavour, Herbert Mehler, Heather Nicol, Reinhard Reitzenstein, Mitch Robertson and Brandon Vickerd.

Vidéothèque
This space will offer visitors the opportunity to engage with a curated looped program of videos submitted by Art Toronto participating galleries. Films will be screened daily during public hours and include work by the following artists: Janet Bellotto, Nadav Assor, Adam David Brown, Wyn Geleynse, Prano Bailey-Bond, Fraser Stables, Jon Claytor, Dr. Lisa Anderson, Adad Hannah, Public Studio (Elle Flanders and Tamira Sawitzky), Geoffrey Pugen, Philippe Blanchard, Nick & Sheila Pye, Kelly Richardson, Paul Wong and Mark Lewis.

Art Toronto Programming
Art Toronto programming takes place daily and includes a line-up of keynote speakers, panel discussions and presentations. Denise Markonish, Shirley Madill, Paul Butler, William Huffman, and Christine Lalonde are all part of the line-up of highly respected curators and cultural commentators taking part in Art Toronto 2011.

Collect Call
Curated by Toby Lawrence, this one-time event powered by the PechaKucha 20×20 format is dedicated to exploring attitudes in contemporary art and contemporary collecting practices. With the aim to ignite excitement about collecting in young and new collectors, this event, moderated by Views on Canadian Art’s Andrea Carson, will bring together a dynamic group of industry professionals to engage in their love of contemporary art.

Power Talks
Presented by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, the ever-popular Power Talks presents influential art-world figures discussing their projects and ideas in the context of the Art Toronto 2011 fair. This year’s presenters include Trevor Smith, Ralph Rugoff and Kitty Scott.
