Margaret Wharton: Constructions at Jean Albano Gallery

Jean Albano Gallery is pleased to announce Constructions, an exhibition of recent work by renowned Chicago-based sculptor Margaret Wharton.  Wharton is known for manipulating common, everyday objects such as chairs, books or even baseball bats, and transforming them into witty and often critical works of art.  The exhibition opens on Friday, April 22 and will be on view through Saturday, June 11, 2011.  An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 22nd from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Jean Albano Gallery, 215 W Superior, Chicago, 60654.

Margaret Wharton’s celebrated history of repurposing found materials to take on new meaning through disassembly and reconstruction continues in Constructions.  Featuring work created as recently as 2011, the exhibition will invite gallery visitors to discover some of the sculptor’s newest imagery.  While many of the pieces incorporate her signature material – the chair – they also employ an assortment of other familiar items from golf clubs and tennis rackets to spaghetti noodles and a salad bowl.  Precise craftsmanship and attention to detail are also apparent in her new works and continue to be integral to her artistic process.

Margaret Wharton was born in Portsmouth, VA and earned her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975.  She has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, IL), Evanston Arts Center (Chicago, IL), Montalvo Arts Center (Saratoga, CA), the Laguna Gloria Museum of Art (Austin, TX) and the Gibbes Museum of Art (Charleston, SC).  Examples of her work are included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), the Dallas Museum (Dallas, TX), the Milwaukee Art Museum (Milwaukee, WI), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, IL), the Seattle Art Museum (Seattle, WA) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY). She is represented by Jean Albano Gallery, Chicago.
