“Revelations of the Brush: Joseon Scholar Ink Paintings,” to be exhibited in the main gallery this September 2010 Asia Week, showcases classic monochromatic screens and hanging scrolls by Korean scholar officials of the late Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).
The exhibition, which compares and contrasts traditional scholarly subjects as depicted by different artists — including “Four Gentlemen” (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo), landscapes, and calligraphy — seeks to facilitate a greater understanding of the essence of classic Korean ink paintings and the nineteenth-century scholars who produced them. Represented are such artist luminaries as Prince YI Ha Ung (1820-1898), HEO Ryeon (1809-1892), JEONG Tae-o (early 19th century), AN Jung-sik (1816-1919), and JO Hui-ryong (1789-1866).
Secluded from the outside world and restricted to the home, the upper-class women who lived during the conservative Joseon Dynasty nevertheless found means of expression through the refined arts and crafts with which they decorated the Anbang, or women’s personal room.
Kang Collection’s concurrent exhibition, “Hidden Beauty: Lacquerware, Textiles, and Furnishings from the Joseon Women’s Quarters,” brings together a selection of precious objects, including fine lacquer boxes, tables, metal-fitted wooden chests, decorative screens, and traditional silk wrapping cloths and garments that once belonged to women of the late Joseon dynasty.
