Photography Exhibit Showcases Cameron Parish Louisiana Unspoiled Coastal Habitats

Matthew White’s traveling photography exhibition featuring 22 images from his Cameron Parish, Louisiana, collection is showing at the Sulphur Regional Library at 1160 Cypress Street in Sulphur, Louisiana from July 13, 2010 through August 13, 2010. At 2:00 p.m. on August 13, White will give a lecture and slide presentation at the Sulphur Regional Library.

Since 2005 White has documented this unique coastal region in southwest Louisiana that very few “outsiders” have seen. His images are a moving testimony to the beauty and resilience of a locale (that in spite of being twice storm ravaged in the past five years) remains still untouched by the 21st century. The goal of the exhibition is to raise awareness for one of the last unspoiled vestiges of Louisiana’s fragile and rapidly vanishing coastal regions and to support the continued preservation of this unique coastal settlement.

According to Esther Pennington, Manager of the Sulphur Regional Library, “We are pleased to have the opportunity to host this beautiful exhibit at the library and look forward to sharing the unique images of our neighboring Cameron Parish with patrons. Matthew White’s work is a visual testament to the importance of the protection and preservation of our coastal regions.”

The exhibit debuted at the Cameron Parish Public Library on May 10, 2010. The Sulphur exhibit will close at the Sulphur Regional Library with a lecture and slide presentation by White, “Cameron Parish through the Photographer’s Lens” featuring additional images from his photo tours of the parish at 2:00 PM on August 13, 2010. White is also offering special pricing on his fine art prints and posters during the show with a percentage of the proceeds to benefit Calcasieu Parish Libraries.

Matthew White fell in love with photography at an early age. He has lived and worked as a freelance photographer and musician, after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, and a Master’s Degree in jazz studies from the University of New Orleans as a summa cum laude graduate. White’s large scale photographic work includes “The Louisiana Collection” fine arts documentation of south Louisiana shot alternately in 35mm black-and-white and large-scale color digital and “South Florida Unseen” landscapes tracing the limits of urban sprawl and agricultural areas along the Everglades watershed. His most recent solo exhibitions include “The End of the Great River: Photographs of the Lower Mississippi River Delta.” Winner in the Print Center 82nd International Competition, his work has also been featured in the Grand Isle Juried Art Exhibit, the New Orleans Photo Alliance Elemental/Environmental Space Exhibit, and as part of a permanent museum exhibit for Parks Canada in New Brunswick. He was invited by the U.S. Department of State to present his images during the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. He most recently partnered with Lighthawk and the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana on a series of aerial flyovers to take pictures of the endangered Louisiana coast.
