Gauguin began to gain popularity in 1889 when he and some of his friends exhibited their work during the Paris World’s Fair, showcasing their displays at the Café des Arts, which was owned at the time by a man named Volpini.
Gaugin’s works included a series of prints which he had initially made at the instigation of Theo van Gogh as a way of drawing attention to his paintings, and the prints became known over time as the Volpini suite.
