A collection of paintings from a deceased estate in Jersey, showing beautiful landscape scenes of Elizabeth Castle, Martello Towers and Mount Orgueil Castle among other Jersey sights, are to feature in the British and Continental Pictures auction on Tuesday 20th April at Bonhams, Knightsbridge.
The mainly coastal scenes are highly evocative of the charm of the island and are painted by a variety of artists including Alfred Clint (1807-1883). Clint was President of the Society of British Artists and exhibited landscapes at the Royal Academy between 1829 and 1871. His scene entitled ‘Mount Orgueil Castle from Grouville Bay, Jersey’ is estimated at £2,000-3,000.
Another highlight of the collection is ‘Mount Orgueil’ by Samuel Phillips Jackson (1830-1904), estimated at £1,000-1,500. The sober greys, greens and browns demonstrate Jackson’s talent for conveying moist and hazy atmospheres, the effect for which he gained his reputation.
The other Jersey scenes represented at the auction are in a variety of styles by the artists Alfred Herbert, Edward Duncan, Tobias Young, Warwick Gobel and Frank F. Faed.
Alongside this collection are six paintings by Paul Sandby, the landscape painter whose work is currently being celebrated in an exhibition at the Royal Academy, where he was one of the Founding Members in 1768. The works are of scenes throughout the UK including Nottingham Castle, and all display his trademark detail and talent.
Veronique Scorer, Director of Knightsbridge Pictures comments, “Jersey views are relatively rare, so it is exciting to have so many in one sale. My personal favourite is the view of Elizabeth Castle and St Helier attributed to Tobias Young, a delightful early view of the island.”
