Gary Vikan, Director of the Walters Art Museum
Norman Steinman fought in the Philippines in 1945 in the 25th Infantry Division, and after his death in 1990, his daughter, Louise, discovered a box of letters and souvenirs. The discovery of a silk Japanese flag launched her on a journey to Hiroshima and the fallen Japanese soldier’s home, exposing grim realities of war and her father’s postwar melancholy.
Decades Later: Reverberations of a Poet’s Life in Japan
