Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Buchan as Chairman of the Board. Following in the footsteps of Sir Ian Wrigglesworth who held the position for four years, Peter Buchan was appointed Chairman with unanimous support from the Board on Wednesday 21 October 2009.
Peter Buchan brings to Baltic a wealth of business expertise gathered throughout his immensely successful architectural career. He became a director of Newcastle based Ryder Architecture in 1984 and currently in his role as Chief Executive, has recently overseen the highly acclaimed and impressive rebuilding of Newcastle City Library. At Ryder he has particular responsibility for design excellence and business development, shaping and evolving the core values and ethos of the company. It was this expertise which impressed both his fellow Baltic Board members and major funders when he took the reigns as Baltic’s Acting Chairman as Sir Ian’s tenure came to an end in July this year.
Peter Buchan with Baltic Director Godfrey Worsdale welcomes Baltic’s new Chief Curator, Laurence Sillars, who officially joined Baltic on Monday 2 November. These new additions to the existing dynamic Baltic team are committed to building on the gallery’s existing high profile and guiding it into a prosperous future.
Godfrey Worsdale, Baltic Director added: “I am extremely pleased with the announcement of the appointment of Peter Buchan as Baltic’s new Chairman of its Board of Trustees. Since my arrival as Director a year ago, Peter has demonstrated a tremendous commitment to the organization and has been a constant source of well considered advice. Peter’s accomplishments, both as a creative professional and a highly respected businessman, make clear the invaluable credentials he will be able to bring to the role.”
