Scholz Family Works on Paper Gallery September 6–October 4, 2009
This exhibition features artworks recently given by Advisory Council member, and former chair, Dr. R. Stephen Lehman and his wife Maureen. Artists represented include Aldegrever, Dürer, Rembrandt, Renoir, Stieglitz and Whistler.
A featured image is Spring Showers, New York, 1900, a photogravure by Alfred Stieglitz who, “subscribed to a theory that the principal subject of a photo should be in sharp focus while secondary elements should be left out of focus. The theory was called “naturalism” because it was thought that these types of photographs most closely resembled the way the human eye naturally sees things, focusing on one area while surrounding details fall away. In Spring Showers, New York, Stieglitz let the weather keep the photo’s background slightly out of focus, then added to the effect when he printed the negative by keeping the area in low contrast and evenly toned.” ( Quote from Get The Picture: Thinking About Photographs, Minneapolis Institute of Art.)
The Snite Museum of Art features collections that place it among the finest university art museums in the nation. It contains over 24,000 works representing many of the principal cultures and periods of world art history.
Exceptional holdings include the Jack and Alfrieda Feddersen collection of Rembrandt etchings, the Noah L. and Muriel Butkin collection of 19th-century French art, the John D. Reilly collection of Old Master and 19th-century drawings, the Janos Scholz collection of 19th-century European photographs, and the Mr. and Mrs. Russell G. Ashbaugh, Jr., collection of Mestrovic sculpture and drawings. Other collection strengths include Olmec and Preclassic Mesoamerican art, 20th-century art, Northern Native American art, and decorative and design arts.
Outdoor sculpture is displayed on the University campus and in the Mary Loretto and Terrence J. Dillon Courtyard, which features two large kinetic sculptures by George Rickey. During the summer of 2007 additional works by Rickey were permanently installed in the Entrance Atrium Gallery.
