Sydney Life Captured Through the Lens – Competition and Exhibition

Twenty two outstanding photographs depicting all walks of Sydney life from a bulging body builder to burlesque dancers to a centenarian’s wedding have been chosen as finalists in this year’s Sydney Life photography exhibition.

The images will be blown up to bed sheet size and displayed along the central walkway of Hyde Park North from 1- 25 October as part of City of Sydney’s eighth annual Art & About public arts festival.

The $10,000 competition and exhibition is Australia’s premier outdoor public photographic installation. Over 580 entries were received this year.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said; “Every year, Sydney Life gives Sydneysiders and visitors a chance to view humorous, moving and vibrant artworks from the city’s most brilliant photographers.”

“It celebrates the diverse experiences of our city allowing artists from across Sydney to share their unique city moments and pastimes.”

The City of Sydney and AMP Capital Investors will present the Sydney Life Prize, awarded to the artist whose work is judged most outstanding. The prize is valued at $10,000, which is comprised of $5,000 cash plus a $5,000 investment in the AMP Capital Sustainable Share Fund.

The distinguished judging panel comprised of Sandy Edwards (Producer and Curator, Arthere), Julie Rrap (renowned Sydney Artist), Malcolm Smith (Program Manager, Australian Centre for Photography) and Alastair Walton (Director, City Engagement at City of Sydney).

Malcolm Smith said: “The 600 images we looked through included Sydney’s untold histories, obscure and outrageous personalities, hidden secrets and – of course – the iconic locations. Sydneysiders really do have a unique take on the world and I think that’s what resounded with us all in our final selection.”

The winner of the People’s Choice Award, decided by members of the public, will receive FUJIFILM Australia products worth $3,000.
