From July 17 through August 8, Storyopolis Fine Art in association with The 4th Wall Gallery in Dallas presents “The Art of Dr. Seuss – A Retrospective and National Exhibition”. Celebrating the life and art of Theodor Seuss Geisel, this exhibit will chronicle his life and career with a focus on the common artistic links throughout his nearly 70 years of creativity. Storyopolis children’s bookstore and Gallery, which began in LA over 14 years ago, has been called “the kind of bookstore and art gallery one finds in Fairy Tales.” The West coast Storyopolis is a staple for Hollywood celebrities and has regularly been listed in “the best of LA” by LA Magazine. Today we bring the art collection and The Gallery to the Texas art community in its new home in Dallas. The famed Storyopolis book gift baskets will continue to be available for purchase by visiting our store currently in Sherman Oaks, CA and its website at www.storyopolis.com

Kristine Abramowitz, who along with her husband Matthew, owns Storyopolis Fine Art and The 4th Wall Gallery, describes this ‘gallery within a gallery’ as featuring original illustrations from children’s books by world renowned artists where the “art lifts the stories from the pages of books onto the walls of children’s rooms — or those nostalgic adults who realize this as an untapped investment opportunity.”

“The Art of Dr. Seuss” begins with his early drawings in Life Magazine, includes his editorial, advertising, military, and book illustrations, and finally, his Secret Art collection. Works in the exhibition have been curated from significant public and private collections, including the University of California San Diego archives, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, and the Dr. Seuss Estate, and feature rare and never-before-seen art from the 1920’s to 1990’s.

About the Artist: Theodor Seuss Geisel (American, 1904-1991)

Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little known editorial cartoonist in the 1920’s. His intriguing perspective and fresh concepts ignited his career, and his work evolved quickly to deft illustrations, modeled sculpture and sophisticated oil paintings of elaborate imagination.

Dr. Seuss is currently best known as one of the most beloved and bestselling children’s authors of all time, having written and illustrated classics such as Green Eggs and Ham and How The Grinch Stole Christmas! Geisel was also a political cartoonist for PM magazine during World War II, as well as a contributing illustrator for Vanity Fair and Life. He had a long, successful advertising career, he was an Academy Award winner for his wartime documentaries, as well as his animated short film, “Gerald McBoing Boing,” and today his paintings hang in fine art galleries.

His unique artistic vision emerged as the golden thread which linked every facet of his varied career, and his artwork became the platform from which he delivered 44 children’s books, over 400 World War II political cartoons, hundreds of advertisements, and countless editorials filled with wonderfully inventive animals, characters and clever humor. Geisel single-handedly forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the Surrealist Movement of the early 20th Century and the inspired nonsense of a child’s classroom doodles.
