The Washington Post’s Style & Arts Section Breaks Down Economy’s Effects on the Arts

This Sunday, The Washington Post’s Style & Arts section takes an in-depth look at how the economy is affecting nearly every aspect of culture and arts in the Washington region. This special feature looks at how, despite shrinking endowments, funding cuts and changing consumer habits that are altering theater, galas, visual art and dance, Washington’s art institutions and groups are finding creative ways to flourish and attract audiences.

Style reporters Paul Farhi and Jacqueline Trescott examine how arts groups in Washington and around the country are coping with economic changes and explore whether Washington is more insulated from the economic decline than other arts area. Dance critic Sarah Kaufman talks to professional and aspiring dancers.

Roxanne Roberts of The Reliable Source writes about how arts galas and fundraisers at venues like The Kennedy Center and The Corcoran Gallery of Art are getting cheaper, forgoing flowers and serving chicken for the very first time.

“There is always a great deal of discussion about the importance of the arts, but this industry is often overlooked when people talk about the economy,” said Steve Reiss, Deputy Assistant Managing Editor of Style. “This package looks at multiple aspects of the arts industry in Washington and brings to light their troubles and triumphs as the country continues to fight the recession.”

While some arts groups are tightening the belt, Trescott reports that Michael Kaiser’s investment in big productions, including “Ragtime,” is paying off. The special feature will have a number of other articles, including a consumer column about how to avoid ticket surcharges, six reasons why the recession is good for the contemporary art world, a profile of the man best known for singing on the FreeCreditReport.com commercials, and more.
