In “Pieces of My Memory”, Thai artist Chairat Mongcolnut examines the transition that takes place when old wooden houses are torn down and replaced with concrete. The wood served to protect against wind and rain but now is left lifeless – scraps of material apparently useless. Chairat Mongcolnut gives them purpose, through his hands this discarded wood becomes the material for his sculpture. On exhibition through 3rd of May, 2009.
Chairat Mongcolnut employs a Thai technique called ‘Poon Paun’ to mold these folk-style characters; the work is implicitly organic, taking objects with no commercial value (wood, broken pottery..) to create an artistic one. Chairat Mongcolnut is a recent BFA graduate from Silpakorn University Bangkok, and Whitespace is delighted to present his first solo exhibition, a culmination of 3 years of work. The opening for “Pieces of My Memory” is on April 3rd, 2009, from 6-10 PM, and the exhibition will show until May 3rd 2009.
