Mallet Japan’s Modern and Contemporary auction will be held on June 13th in Tokyo.
The sale offers a wide range of items from screenprints by Andy Warhol (Lot 307 Superman: 8,000,000-12,000,000JPY, Lot 306 Bald Eagle: 3,000,000-4,000,000JPY) to acrylic works by Yayoi Kusama (Lot 126 Midday Flower Bed: 4,000,000-6,000,000JPY, Lot 129 Pumpkins: 6,000,000-8,000,000JPY) as well as paintings by Bernard Buffet (Lot 200 Dahlias dans un mazagran: 5,000,000-6,000,000JPY, Lot 209 Jacinthes fond noir: 6,000,000-8,000,000JPY) and many more.
The sale also includes a selected group of Japanese paintings from the Meguro Gajoen Museum which ended its 70 years of history in June 2001. While a number of valuable artworks from the Taisho period (1912-1926) were lost during the years of adversity, thanks to the effort of Rikizo Hosokawa, the founder of the Meguro Gajoen, this superb collection which consisted of more than 4,000 elaborate artworks including a quarter of works acquired from the most prestigious salons of the time such as Tei-ten, In-ten, and Bun-ten survived the financial crisis in the early 1930s and the Great Tokyo Air Raids in 1945 and is here in front of us today to show us the Japanese art of the lost period. It will be a great opportunity to acquire some very important Japanese artworks.
