Artist Paula Scher’s map paintings present revealing portraits of the world. Using real maps as a source of reference, she charts out the place in question and in the process, blurs the lines between subjective and objective, and fact and fiction. Reflected in these compelling works are media-fueled impressions of places such as China, India, Europe, the Middle East, and New York City. Expressive, vibrantly colored, and layered with detail and information, these images give way to highly interpretive representations of different countries, cities, and regions from all over the world.
Inspired by these monumental works on canvas is Paula Scher’s highly acclaimed “MAPS” print series. Maya Stendhal Gallery is delighted to announce that “China,” “Europe,” and “India” will be the newest additions to the collection that has caught the attention of art collectors the world over. Released in edition of 90, these stunning hand-pulled screen-prints will measure 60” x 40” (152 cm. x 101 cm.) and will be printed on handmade deluxe Lana Quarelle paper. Each limited edition print is signed, numbered, and dated by the artist, and will be accompanied with its own certificate of authenticity.
“China” is a mesmerizing festival of colors, the confetti colors of a capitalist boom. Vibrantly composed lines and words of yellow, blue, red, and pink map out its massive geographical terrain. The first of the series, “China” will be released in June 2008.
The map of “Europe” is presented in a dazzling palette of red, green, orange, and blue. Names of regions, cities, and towns blanket the entire work written in zigzagging verticals, horizontals, and diagonals to an awing effect. “Europe” will be published in September 2008.
“India” pulsates in a mirage of lustrous pinks, charted with blue, green, and yellow road markers and orange location names. Accented with shimmering copper, “India” beats as the global outsourced economy flows though its wiry highways. The print’s release is scheduled for December 2008.
