The Nevada Historical Society will present the exhibit “Nevada Landmarks” by artist Erik Holland in the society’s Hallway Gallery. The free exhibit opening reception will be held August 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The exhibit will run through October 2, 2010.
The exhibit features paintings and images of places and buildings in the Nevada Landscape by Holland. According to Holland the exhibit, “features new paintings of old buildings, along with a few distinctive Nevada peaks.”

In addition, the Nevada Historical society is adding some historical photographs from its collection to go along with Holland’s paintings.
Holland has made his living as a painter, cartoonist and art teacher since 2003. He has had a one man show every year since 2000 in the Reno area. His specialties as a painter include landscape and old buildings.
“I am currently working on a line of note cards that will celebrate an old building from every town in the state of Nevada,” said Holland.
Holland has won many awards with his painting, including a Professional Artists grant from Sierra Arts, a Best of Show at the first Sierra Arts Faces and Places, and a First Place in oils from the Nevada Artists Association. Holland has also done several murals in Alaska and in Nevada. He exhibits his work at the Co-op Gallery, Ryries Art and Home in Reno, Vigil’s Collection in Nevada City, Briggs and Company in Winters, California and at the Corridor Gallery in Truckee. He is a member of the Nevada Artist’s Association, and the Artist’s Co-op in Reno.
The Nevada Historical Society, located at 1650 N. Virginia Street on the UNR campus, was founded in 1904 and is the oldest state museum. Programs include an active exhibition schedule, public programs and docent-guided tours. The Historical Society’s Research Library, with its extensive collection of Nevada information and photographs, is open to the public from noon to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. The exhibit galleries and museum store are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is $4 for adults ages 17 and over, children and members are free.
The Nevada Historical Society is one of seven museums managed by the State Division of Museums and History, an agency of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs. The Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs serves Nevada’s citizens and visitors through cultural and information management, presentation and promotion of cultural resources, and education. The Department also includes the State Office of Historic Preservation, Nevada State Library and Archives and the Nevada Arts Council.
