Baciccia is pleased to present Un Bel Sogno Paintings of Italy by local artist Ella Yang

Brooklyn, NY – Nearly 16 years after one of the most formative experiences in her artistic career – a drawing and painting workshop in Italy, Ella Yang returned to Umbria, a bucolic farming province north of Rome, in the summer of 2017 for a 2-week residency program. This exhibition, Un Bel Sogno (“A Beautiful Dream”), comprises 14 of the 17 paintings resulting from that trip and is the first time these paintings are being shown to the public. Most of them were painted on-site in the tiny medieval village of Montecastello di Vibio (population of about 1600). There are views of the colorful patchwork farms in the valleys between hilltop towns, ancient town walls made of stone and brick, and charming light-filled piazzas.

This exhibit is hosted graciously by Baciccia, a new Italian restaurant that offers brick-oven pizza and Liguria-inspired cuisine crafted with a passion for flavor, freshness and authenticity. Baciccia is located at 426a 7th Avenue, Brooklyn, and is open Monday & Tuesday, 4-10:30 pm; Wednesday & Thursday, noon-10:30 pm; Friday & Saturday, noon-11; Sunday, noon-10 pm.

Ella Yang, a native New Yorker and first-generation Korean-American, is mostly self-taught. She takes great pleasure in traditional methods of oil painting, and especially working “en plein air,” i.e. on site with a portable easel. She states that her goal is “to find a simple way to capture the spirit of a scene at a particular instance. Inevitably the paintings become infused with my own wonder and delight at having discovered something – a pattern, a gesture, an angle of light – that is inherently pleasing. At best my paintings pay tribute to the abundant benefits of attentiveness.”

When not roaming the streets of Brooklyn or traveling to find painting motifs, Yang loves working in her studio near the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY. Yang shows her work in solo and group exhibitions in New York City and its environs. Her paintings are in private collections in the USA, as well as in Hong Kong, Italy, France, and Austria, and in a number of corporations and hospitals. Three of her paintings are currently on display at the U.S. Embassy in Geneva, Switzerland, selected by the Art in Embassies program of the U.S. State Department. In the summer of 2006, she was awarded a month’s stay at the internationally recognized artist residency program the Vermont Studio Center. She is honored to be included in the book “100 New York Painters,” by C.M. Dantzic, which was published by Schiffer Books in 2006. Yang is a graduate of Yale College.
