Arts Gowanus Neighborhood Planning Study with NYC Department of City Planning

This Thursday evening, the NYC Department of City Planning will hold a kick-off meeting to introduce their Gowanus neighborhood planning study (or “PLACES” study). This process will determine if and how Gowanus will be re-zoned. The Department of City Planning (DCP) decides zoning laws throughout the city. The zoning laws determine the types of uses that can or cannot be developed in any given neighborhood.

Gowanus is currently zoned primarily for manufacturing. As we have seen, over the past several years, exceptions to that zoning law have been made to allow some residential developments. It is important that anyone interested in the future of Gowanus attend and be part of this process. Over the next few months, the DCP will be addressing questions about the future of Gowanus: will it remain manufacturing, how affordable can it be, can it continue to nurture the creative community, will more residential developments be permitted, and many more questions.

This DCP process is the natural next step coming out of the Bridging Gowanus community planning process, which was led by our elected officials as a way for the community together to create a vision for the future of Gowns.
