Janette Newman Fires Up Familiar Forms

. June 24, 2013

Australian artist Janette Newman works in a dazzling array of styles, but a resilient dynamism and vibrant palette of bold, warm colors run through all her paintings. The result is that the disparate themes and subjects are visually linked and engrossing on both an individual and a collective level.

Newman’s compositions include Impressionist still lifes, Fauvist landscapes, Cubist cityscapes, Symbolist figuration and dreamlike Surrealist visions. Most feature an array of searing hues ranging from fiery oranges and booming pinks to deep reds and pale yellows. The versatile movements that she brings to each subject and style match this consistency of palette.

Newman’s compositions, even when they seem to allude to more staid art historical precedents, are full of depth and bursting with vigor. The artist often makes this enticing aesthetic tendency literally present by including forms that seem to be blowing apart, or careening uncontrollably out of frame. Yet this motif is never aggressive. She pushes gently and playfully at the edges of the various styles she approaches, revealing, in the process, how rich and exciting they really are.
