Jennifer Morrison Order and Chaos and the Spaces in Between

“I am fascinated by the intersection of order and chaos and the spaces in between,” says Jennifer Morrison, and indeed it is clear that her work is directed toward investigating that intersection. Working in oil paint, she creates vibrantly colored images that balance a free-flowing sense of motion and energy with a rigorous sense of clarity. Multi-hued lines swirl around and through each other, while repeated shapes form a mosaic whose parts seem to dance before the viewer. But that motion and energy are always precisely rendered on the canvas, giving each image a solid underpinning.

Morrison says that her color palette finds its inspiration in the environment of her native South Africa. Her paintings take the colors of nature and incorporate them into patterns that bring the motifs of modern abstract painting to mind. Yet they also stay true to the outlines found in the natural world, abstracting them into a form that is at once formal and organic. For the last two decades, Morrison has lived and worked in London.
