Awareness of the fragile beauty of our coastal regions has never been more important. Capital City Books is proud to announce the publication of The Quiet Voice of the Outer Banks, A Visual Journal, a collection of paintings by Christaphora Robeers that celebrates all facets of delicate and often endangered coastal life.
The Quiet Voice of the Outer Banks will be sold alongside Robeers’s artwork at several gallery openings: Glenn Eure’s Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head, NC on September 12, the Dare County Arts Council in Manteo, NC in on September 18, the Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA on November 19, and the Red Door Gallery in Richmond, VA on December 3.
Robeers’s stunning collection of paintings was inspired by the rich history of the Outer Banks, the resilient spirit of those who live there, and also her own memories of growing up in a small fishing village on the North Sea.
Robeers comments, “This hidden sanctuary [of the Outer Banks] was like candy for my eyes. As an artist, the striations of clouds, sea, beach and dunes in contrast with the quaint cottages, lighthouses, and boats inspired me. I was also reminded of the seacoast of the Netherlands, where I was born and spent my childhood years.”
As a child, Robeers could only admire the beauty of the sea from afar, since traversing the dunes was forbidden. After World War II, the Dutch beaches went through an extensive clean-up effort to remove the land mines planted by the Nazis.
Robeers recalls, “I distinctly remember walking along a safe access trail that led directly to the water and there I encountered images of frozen sea foam creating strange sculptures that sparkled like diamonds in the sun.”
In The Quiet Voice, Robeers presents a profound and elegant study of the Outer Banks during the fall, winter, and early spring. Mysterious sea creatures, elegant horses and playful birds flit among the pages. Lighthouses, the stalwart guardians of the shore, beam forth from new angles. Outer Bankers immerse themselves in the everyday—keeping shop, walking the shore, tending to fishing lines—while also fostering the ties that bind all coastal communities.
In celebrating the changing of the seasons, Robeers also meditates on history and the inevitable changes that time and nature bring to a place.
About the Author/Artist
Robeers’s work has been included in dozens of national and international exhibitions such as European Fine Art Fair, the International Pastel Show and as an Artist Signature Member of the Virginia Watercolor Society. Her art is on display in museums, schools, and offices in the United States, Asia, Canada, and Europe.
