Gilbert Stuart Portrait for Grogan & Company Auction

Grogan & Company Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers will be conducting their June auction on Sunday, June 6th at 12:00 p.m. The auction, comprised of Fine Art, 18th and 19th century Furniture and Decorations, Silver, Jewelry and Oriental Rugs from a variety of estates and collections, will be held at their Dedham Gallery.

Fine art offerings feature a selection of important American and English portraits including Gilbert Stuart’s Portrait of General Charles Rainsford, a 30 x 24 inch oil on canvas of the British general responsible for recruiting Hessian soldiers to fight the colonists during the Revolutionary War. The portrait was created in England by Stuart between 1776-1777, while he was studying under Benjamin West. The work is estimated to fetch $25,000-35,000.

A Pair of 19th century Oval Portrait Miniatures on Ivory depicting a boy and girl (Frances and Edward Howe), is estimated at $20,000-30,000 and is among a selection of fine portrait miniatures.

A Portrait of the Lincoln Children of Wareham, Massachusetts, by 19th century Dedham portrait artist Alvin Fisher, circa 1834, is estimated at $20,000-30,000 and a 60 x 48 inch oil by Charles Mills, another Dedham artist known for having designed the stained glass windows in Memorial Hall at Harvard College and for Trinity Church in Boston, is estimated at $3,000-5,000. The painting, titled The Little Love God, was inspired by William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 154, and is being sold to benefit the Dedham Historical Society.

A first octavo edition, circa 1854 of James John Audubon’s The Quadrupeds of North America, formerly in the collection of the prominent Ames family of Easton, Massachusetts, includes 155 color plates and is expected to fetch $8,000-12,000.

Scultpure offerings include a bronze hand titled Main Gauche (left hand in blessing position, estimated at $10,000-15,000), conceived in 1895 by Auguste Rodin and cast between 1937-1942 by Alexis Rudier.

A large bronze group by Albert de Carrier-Belleuse, Enlevement D’Hippodamie, from the collection of respected art historian Professor Fred Licht, is expected to bring $20,000-30,000.

Highlights from the furniture and decorative arts offerings include an important and extensive collection of Staffordshire Historical Blue Wares featuring pieces depicting Franklin’s Tomb, the Nahant Hotel, Near Boston and the Landing of General Lafayette, Castle Gardens, New York, 1824.

A Rare Tiger Maple Shelf Clock by Connecticut clock maker, Mark Leavenworth (presale estimate of $3,000-5,000) should also draw attention from collectors, as will a Rare French Brass and Bevelled Glass Astrological Mantle Clock, estimated at $5,000-10,000.

Other offerings include several fine pieces of 19th century Georgian and American furniture, a large collection of Chinese Export and European Porcelain, an Italian micromosaic plaque and a collection of Japanese ivory carvings.
