Scottsdale Fine Art Auction Sale

The renowned Scottsdale Art Auction, being held April 10, 2010, will have one-of-a-kind works of fine art expected to break records at this year’s event. A rare Charles M. Russell painting is estimated at $1.8 to $2.8 million, for example. Attendance at the 2010 auction is expected to exceed 400 art buyers, many from around the globe. The Scottsdale Art Auction is the largest fine art auction in the Southwest.

Charles Marion Russell is considered one of the greatest artists of the American West. Russell created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Indians, and landscapes set in the Western United States, in addition to bronze sculptures. Known as “the cowboy artist” Russell was also a storyteller and author. The C. M. Russell Museum Complex located in Great Falls, Mont., houses more than 2,000 Russell artworks, personal objects, and artifacts.

A spectacular painting by Ernest Blumenschein, the rarest of the Taos Founders, will be featured at an estimate of $300,000 to 500,000. The six artists that founded the Taos Society of Artists in 1915 were: Bert Geer Phillips, Ernest L. Blumenschein, Joseph Henry Sharp, Oscar E. Berninghaus, E. Irving Couse and W. Herbert Dunton. These six artists are generally referred to as “the Taos Founders” or “the Founders” because they were the first artists to settle permanently in Taos to paint, thus forming the beginning of the Taos art colony. Two rare Henry Farny pieces are also offered at the auction.

Highlights from the 2009 Scottsdale Art Auction include Charles Schreyvogel’s Saving Their Lieutenant, at $1,639,000; Norman Rockwell’s Fishing Party, at $253,000; and Frank Tenney Johnson’s Nighttime in the Canyon, at $218,500.
“Scottsdale has long been thought of as the epicenter of Western art,” said Brad Richardson, one of the partners of Scottsdale Art Auction. “We are proud to continue that tradition with several signature Western art pieces in this year’s Scottsdale Art Auction. Having said that, we will also feature many contemporary artists, making our auction well rounded and appealing to any art collector.”

The Scottsdale Art Auction will be held at Legacy Gallery at 7176 Main Street in Scottsdale 85251, on April 10, 2010, from 10 am. to 5 pm., for registered buyers. It is $40 to register to buy and may be done by calling 480-945-0225 or visiting the website. The artwork may be previewed from April 2 through 9, from 10 am. to 5:30 pm. at Legacy Gallery.
