Artworks to be Auctioned to Benefit The Heckscher Museum of Art

On December 5, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., The Heckscher Museum of Art will offer guests attending its annual benefit and live art auction being held in the Museum the opportunity to purchase works of art by many prominent artists, among them Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Tobey and April Gornik who are featured in museum collections worldwide. Titled “Celebrate Achievement,” this year’s benefit honors Frank Olt, artist, teacher and advocate of the arts, and is being chaired by Heckscher Trustee and Huntington resident, Judith Streiter.

“The Heckscher is a cultural gem in our community,” said The Heckscher’s Interim Executive Director Judith A. Jedlicka. “By holding the benefit in the Museum we will offer guests the opportunity to see the current landmark exhibition, “Long Island Moderns: Artists on the North Shore from Edward Steichen to Cindy Sherman”, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Huntington area by featuring works by artists such as Fernand Léger, Irving Penn, Arthur Dove and Cindy Sherman.”

In addition to the live auction, there will be a silent auction and a presentation of fashions and jewelry by internationally-renowned designers presented by Mitchells/Marshs of Huntington. Crew Kitchen of Huntington Harbor is handling the catering that includes hors d’oeuvres and cocktails and a special dessert.

“Celebrate Achievement” honoree Frank Olt is a prominent artist who maintains a studio in Oyster Bay and is a Professor of Art at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. He was one of the first artists-in-residence at P.S. 1, part of the Museum of Modern Art. Olt began his career in ceramics and apprenticed with Rose Krebs, who was educated at the Bauhaus. Olt received large-scale commissions from the New York City Arts in Transit Program for mosaic pieces in a subway station in Long Island City, as well as from the New York Health and Hospitals Corporation for a lobby work in Bellevue Hospital. He recently had a two-person show with Yvonne Thomas at the Lohin-Geduld Gallery in New York; a solo show at the Tria Gallery in New York; and a two-person show, Dialogue, with Alain Kirili at the Nassau County Museum of Art. On Long Island, Olt has had solo exhibitions at the Dillon Gallery and at the Lynda Anderson Gallery.
