Rideau Hall to Host New Art Exhibition/DIASPORArt: Strategy and Seduction of Canadian Artists from Different Cultural Communities

Published 21 September 2009

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr Jean-Daniel Lafond are pleased to welcome to Rideau Hall the exhibition DIASPORArt: Strategy and Seduction of Canadian Artists from Different Cultural Communities in the Collection of the Canada Council Art Bank. Through their works in the exhibition, artists of African, Asian, Middle Eastern or Latin American origin compare their cultural heritage with Western society and its values.

The exhibition of 18 works showcases the intermingling of cultures in Canada. Each piece reflects the cultural diversity that characterizes the Canadian people, while exploring current trends in the visual arts. The artists present their own identities by challenging the status quo of Western popular culture as it is thought of and depicted by the dominant international cultural current. For more information on the exhibition, please visit www.gg.ca/visitus/diaspo_e.asp.

Visitors can view the temporary exhibition in the Ambassadors’ Room during guided tours of the residence. For more information on the tour schedule, log onto www.gg.ca/visitus/tr_e.asp.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Monday, September 21, 2009, at 5:00 p.m., in the presence of Their Excellencies and other guests.
