Celebrate Art And Culture In The Outback – The 2009 Annual Darwin Festival

The 16th annual Darwin Festival, held in Australia’s most youthful capital city, runs from August 13 – 30 and is a celebration of the diversity that makes the tropical harbour town of Darwin Australia’s most unique city.

The 18-day and night multi-cultural celebration of showcases 130 events and performances by local, national and international performers. The events range from indigenous dance performances, art exhibitions, concerts, theatre, film, comedy, cabaret, workshops and more, many in unique outdoor settings including the brand new “Lighthouse” – a tent-like open-air venue made almost entirely of festoon lighting.

One can’t-miss event is the Indigenous Music Awards, taking place on August 21, featuring the best of Australia’s top indigenous musicians. The headliners this year are:
• Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, winner of the 2008 “World Music Album of the Year” and “Best Independent Release” at the ARIA Awards (Australia’s Grammys), also named Northern Territory’s “Australian Of The Year” in 2008
• Jessica Mauboy, platinum-selling singer, Australian Idol runner-up, and 2009 “Best Aussie” winner at the MTV Australian Music Awards
