The Eighth Annual Affordable Art Fair Opens in New York City

Contemporary Art To Take Place May 7 through 10 at 7W New York (7 West 34th Street)

Created to appeal to established collectors and first time art buyers, the eighth annual Affordable Art Fair New York City (AAF NYC) will feature contemporary art priced from $100 – $10,000, with more than 75 percent of the work priced between $100-$5,000. Over 60 galleries from the U.S., Europe, Canada and Asia will be exhibiting original contemporary painting, sculpture, photography and prints at 7W New York (7 West 34th Street) in New York City from May 7 – 10, 2009.

“What sets AAF NYC apart from other fairs is our mission to showcase emerging and established artists and make these original works available at affordable prices,” says Helen Allen, executive director of Ramsay Fairs. “In addition, we strive to serve the growing art market and still appeal to the more seasoned collector. Galleries and auction houses can seem impenetrable, but the focus and environment of this fair makes art accessible.”

“We are interested in attracting new art enthusiasts, and it has been exciting to see new ‘collectors’ come back to the Fair year in and year out to find new artwork for their walls,” observes Ms. Allen. “AAF NYC will continue to offer educational programs including a Lecture Series presented by Travelers, in partnership with Aperture, artlog and the School of Visual Arts (SVA), and sculpture demonstrations.”

Launched in London in 1999, The Affordable Art Fair has successfully expanded to New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Bristol, Amsterdam, Brisbane and Paris and debuted in Brussels earlier this year. “We are thrilled with the interest that The Affordable Art Fairs have received and believe this is due to the welcoming atmosphere for every kind of art lover,” notes Ms. Allen. “This Fair is uniquely positioned to meet the interests of art enthusiasts in these tough economic times, and we are looking forward to another successful year for our exhibitors.”

AAF Past and Present

With the emergence of the Young British Artists (YBA) and the Tate Modern, contemporary art became an increasingly popular genre in Britain in the mid 1990s. Will Ramsay noted that less established artists were exploding onto Britain’s art scene at the same time, making contemporary art more accessible to the general public. In 1996, Ramsay opened Will’s Art Warehouse, a gallery based in London committed to promoting up and coming artists and making art more attainable and approachable. Three years later, he launched the first Affordable Art Fair in London. Since then, more than 500,000 people have visited Affordable Art Fairs around the world and purchased over $140 million worth of art. The combination of reasonable prices and the Fair’s accessibility continue to attract appreciative customers and draw widespread visitor and exhibitor praise.
