PHOTOGRAPHY FOR SOCIAL CHANGE AUCTION

Published March 23rd, 2009

Actor Aaron Eckhart – a photographer when he is not in front of a movie camera – will host an exhibit and silent auction of 100 iconic images taken by leading photographers from around the world, at the Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles on April 18, 2009.

The auction is a benefit for Project 5: Photography for Social Change., which supports talented photojournalists and builds documentary photography through grants, exhibits and publications. In an era of shrinking newspapers, magazines and other outlets for socially concerned photography, photographers are more in need of support than ever before.

Project 5’s silent auctions raise money for a five-year series of photo documentary projects on five pressing social issues: child labor, educational access, health care, immigration, economic globalization. The April 2009 auction will raise funds to complete Dean’s current collaborative project, Child Labor and the Global Village.

“Photojournalists tell stories through their eyes and hearts about what our society is and how society must change,’ says Julia Dean, Los Angeles documentary photographer, founder of Julia Dean Photo Workshops and founder of Project 5. “The economy makes it hard for many photographers, but they are asking questions vital to the future of our country. Their stories must not be lost – we need them.”

Pre-viewing: The silent auction photographs will be available for pre-viewing two days (Friday and Saturday, April 17 & 18) prior to the auction. Pre-bids: Online bids will be welcomed from April 1 until 4 PM on April 18. (http://www.photo4change.org/silentauction.html)
