For the first time, Sotheby’s will present an exhibition of a single artist, the renowned sculptor, Bernar Venet, on the lush grounds of the Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere, Florida, outside Orlando. According to a report in The New York Times, Mexican financier David Martinez paid a staggering $140m for the painting, titled No. 5, 1948, in a private sale in November 2006. The sale was reportedly brokered by Sotheby’s auctioneer Tobias Meyer, however, law firm Shearman & Sterling issued a press release on behalf of Mr Martinez, stating that its client does not own the painting or any rights to acquire it. An artist from Katherine in the Northern Territory of Australia has been selected to take part in the annual Australia Week festivities in the US this month. After winning a $20,000 art prize in Sydney, 39-year-old Darren Siwes will have a collection of his photographs on display at a gallery in New York. Local artists are hosting an art auction on Friday to benefit Skipjack Nautical Wares and Marine Gallery in Portsmouth after a fire destroyed the gallery on Dec. 20. The gallery also served as a home for owners Joe and Alison Elder.
