Officials at Brazil’s top modern art museum where two prized paintings were stolen this week have admitted its collection is uninsured. The Sao Paulo Museum of Art also said there were major failures in the security system. Officials said no alarm was operating when the works by Pablo Picasso and the influential Brazilian artist, Candido Portinari, were stolen. A painting by Spanish artist Joan Miro fetched a record-breaking 11.6 million (US$16.6 million) at a Paris auction, the Drouot Richelieu auction house said Friday. ‘Blue Star,’ a 1927 canvas featuring an irregularly shaped electric blue star surrounded by the artist’s trademark colored squiggles and shapes, was one of 10 works by Miro to hit the auction blocks Thursday. Thieves in Brazil have stolen two paintings said to be worth $100m (£50m) in a dawn raid on Latin America’s most renowned museum. Pablo Picasso’s Portrait of Suzanne Bloch, and The Coffee Worker by Brazil’s Candido Portinari, were taken from the Museum of Art of Sao Paulo. Russian authorities have halted a major London exhibition of French and Russian art over claims Britain has failed to guarantee the paintings’ return. Russia’s culture agency said the show could not go ahead unless the British government took further steps to ensure legal protection for the paintings.
