Mario Testino auctions Diana photo to raise money for earthquake victims in Peru

Photographer Mario Testino auctioned a signed photo of Princess Diana for 46,100 pounds (US$95,265, €64,250) Tuesday to raise money for victims of an earthquake in his homeland of Peru.His photo, which shows a smiling Diana wearing a black dress, first appeared in Vanity Fair magazine in 1997.This summer, the image was used on invitations to a Wembley Stadium concert organized by Prince Harry and Prince William to honor their mother’s memory on the 10th anniversary of her death in a car crash in Paris in 1997.Tuesday’s sale at the London auction house Phillips de Pury & Co. raised funds for Save the Children, the relief agency that is rebuilding some of the 100,000 homes and 1,200 schools that were destroyed or damaged by the August earthquake, which killed more than 500 people.”I have decided to auction an image of Diana to help the people in Peru because, for me, Diana went out of her way to help other people,” Testino has said.A Save the Children spokesman said he did not know who had purchased the print.
